Beauty Pressure

I wanted to use this video to wrap up my project because I think it signifies everything I've researched and wanted to express. I think little girls are so highly influenced by what they see everyday and the advertisements and the media pressure pose on them can have life long effects if it's not recognized, and even then we are still struggling.

"We live in a mass media fantasy world". -Jean Kilbourne

Images are made to effect the way we see ourselves

Media images of female beauty influence everyone. The images not effect the women and make the men in women's lives question the "real women they are surrounded by.

The male gaze

The viewer gazes upon. Constant Monitoring, repairing and the constant pursuit of beauty. This gaze can have very negative effects on women.

Women are constantly examining their self worth.

Rigid Gender Roles

Distorted images of women in the media not only affect women but it also affects mens perception of women and how to disengage from anything that could possibly label them "feminine."

I decided to google search "the perfect man" and the "perfect" woman and these are the images that came up.

Killing Us Softly 3

This is a link to a video that is very telling. Jean Kilbourne investigates advertisements depictions of women. She deconstructs gender stereotypes. She challenges us to consider the relationship between advertising, identity, sexism, and gender violence.

The media posing "innocent" ideals through advertisement.

Girls as sex objects

"Advertising and media images that encourage girls to focus on looks and sexuality are harmful to their emotional and physical health, a new report by the American Psychological Association says." (Jayson, USA Today)

Seeing these images may make young girls treat their own bodies as sexual objects.

Sexualization: When a persons self worth comes from his/her sex appeal or behavior.

Impact of Mass Culture

Watching TV, reading magazines and newspapers, surfing the Net, we are bombarded with airbrushed images of perfect beauty and thinness.

Refelections of women she sees around her.

Ideals to emulate that are out of reach.
